Italian nouns have gender — masculine or feminine — and number — singular or plural. Most masculine nouns end in -o (for example libro), and most feminine nouns end in -a (for example casa). Nouns ending in -e can be masculine or feminine (studente, classe). The plural is formed by changing the ending: -o → -i, -a → -e, -e → -i. Knowing gender and number is important for agreement with articles and adjectives.
